News relating to Camp Mather throughout the year.
Friends of Camp Mather has entered into a competitive grant writing process to secure funds for a new multi-use Sports Court for Camp. The funding is offered through the Community Opportunity Fund (COF). A grant opportunity for all San Francisco parks through the voter approved, 2012 Clean and Safe Parks Bond.
The Proposal: Funding would enable moving the poorly situated basketball court to the area where the badminton court is currently located. This new multi-sport court would be extended in length and resurfaced so that several types of court style sports could easily share the location. Various types of equipment could be utilized, as well as striping for a number of other active games. The addition of new adjustable back boards or multiple sized fixed height baskets would provide more play opportunities for younger players. These proposed changes would allow for expanded play versatility and accommodate a greater range of ages. (Don’t worry Tie Dye will continue.) What makes this plan even more exciting is the opportunity that moving the basketball court provides for other options on the current site. For many years there has been a desire to have an area to do arts and crafts, dance and exercise on the dining hall side of the camp. This area can be repurposed immediately. And... If additional funding can be found it may be possible to create in a future grant, a pavilion area that would allow activities during inclement weather or when shade is needed. How can you help? • Sign our petition and get others to sign as well. • And /Or: Send a letter (or email) of support to: [email protected] or regular mail to: Friends of Camp Mather, Post Office Box, 320542 San Francisco, CA 94132-0542 What to put in the letter / email ? Tell us how these changes would enhance your camp experience....Or how your 5 year old would love to be able to play basketball with a back board that could be adjusted for her. It can be short and simple. But we need a lot of them. This is a win-win project for Camp Mather; help us make it a reality.

It's great to see Friends of Camp Mather taking action to improve the facilities for campers. The proposed changes to the sports court will offer a wider range of activities for campers of all ages. Moving the basketball court to a better location will provide opportunities for other activities, like arts and crafts, and a possible future pavilion area. It's important for the community to show support by signing the petition or sending a letter/email to demonstrate how these changes will enhance their camp experience.
