News relating to Camp Mather throughout the year.
Friends of Camp Mather has entered into a competitive grant writing process to secure funds for a new multi-use Sports Court for Camp. The funding is offered through the Community Opportunity Fund (COF). A grant opportunity for all San Francisco parks through the voter approved, 2012 Clean and Safe Parks Bond.
The Proposal: Funding would enable moving the poorly situated basketball court to the area where the badminton court is currently located. This new multi-sport court would be extended in length and resurfaced so that several types of court style sports could easily share the location. Various types of equipment could be utilized, as well as striping for a number of other active games. The addition of new adjustable back boards or multiple sized fixed height baskets would provide more play opportunities for younger players. These proposed changes would allow for expanded play versatility and accommodate a greater range of ages. (Don’t worry Tie Dye will continue.) What makes this plan even more exciting is the opportunity that moving the basketball court provides for other options on the current site. For many years there has been a desire to have an area to do arts and crafts, dance and exercise on the dining hall side of the camp. This area can be repurposed immediately. And... If additional funding can be found it may be possible to create in a future grant, a pavilion area that would allow activities during inclement weather or when shade is needed.
