What do the lodge, the grounds and the general store at Camp all have in common?
FoCM member Joe Litehiser teases the answer on a recent visit to the San Francisco Beach Chalet. Below is a photo of one of the murals at the chalet and a description that basically says: John McLaren (Parks Superintendent for 53 years) is seated on the bench. Jack Spring, who later became General Manager of the Recreation and Park Department, is holding the root-ball of a sapling redwood. Now to answer the riddle: The lodge at Camp is named after Jack Spring, and his son Paul is, and has been for many years, the chief gardner/groundskeeper at Camp. We tie the general store into the riddle with Jack's grandson, Matthew. Matthew is returning to Camp for the sixth straight year working for FoCM at the the Camp General Store. The roots at Camp really do run deep!

Friends of Camp Mather is soliciting donations for our auction held during our Fall Fundraiser. We rely on generous donors to help obtain the items for this auction, and raise the money we use to help the camp, So if you have the ability to contribute something to be auctioned off, it would certainly be appreciated. Donations of smaller items can be bundled into a "basket", so your items don't have to stand on their own.
We appreciate your consideration – if you would like to contribute something or have an idea of an organization who would, please email the details to [email protected]. Thanks for your support! |
